Before Full Moon, before the Puppet Master series, there was Empire Pictures. While smaller, independent studios were targeting the growing home video market, Charles Band’s visionary studio was producing low-budget features for the multiplexes and grindhouses throughout the world. But, as Band ambitiously exclaimed, “2,000 movies by the year 2000”, his newfound studio was rapidly crumbling beneath him. After five short years, his unbridled passion for motion picture marketing and distribution led to dubious business practices that would ultimately bring about the downfall of one of the most ambitious mini-majors of the 1980’s.
"Celluloid Wizards in the Video Wasteland" is the epic ‘true’ story of the rise and fall of Empire Pictures, as told through the eyes of the innovative team of filmmakers and film professionals who worked together to reinvent and reinvigorate the independent motion picture industry in the 1980‘s. If there were rules to filmmaking, one director would break them all! From the 1960's to the 1990's, writer/director William Grefé was grinding out exploitation films for drive-ins and hardtops across the globe. As a Miami-based regional filmmaker, he utilized the darkest corners of the Florida Everglades as his personal studio backlot. After years of production, the untold story of the Sunshine State's most notorious indie filmmaker comes to life in this epic documentary! Visit our official WEBSITE for more information.
Ballyhoo Motion Pictures is proud to present the first, in-depth documentary about the making of Kevin Reynold's "Waterworld". Once considered the most expensive movie in film history, this epic production uncovers the true story behind this apocalyptic Summer thrill-ride! The documentary features all-new interviews with the cast and crew, exclusive behind the scenes footage, and alternate cuts of the film. The documentary is included on the Limited Edition blu-ray set from Arrow Video, along with multiple versions of the film, and a booklet featuring articles by Daniel Griffith.
Savage! Sadistic! Thrill hungry! When it came to independent filmmaking in the sunshine state, William Grefé was the wildest of the wild! During the 1960s and ‘70s, the Miami-based producer/director transformed the darkest corners of the Florida swamps into his own personal backlot. From rampaging crocodiles possessed by an ancient Seminole witch doctor (DEATH CURSE OF TARTU) to a slithering serpent named STANLEY, William Grefé would grind out low-budget exploitation films for drive-ins and hardtops around the world. Now, without the benefit of cages or other protective devices, the untold story of Florida’s most daring moviemaker comes to the screen…IN PSYCHEDELIC COLOR!
This Limited Edition (1,000) two-disc set features over THREE hours of bonus materials, including the 1977 film, WHISKEY MOUNTAIN, in WIDESCREEN for the first time on home video! Other features include a NEW documentary short on the history of CROWN INTERNATIONAL, two vintage William Gref short films (one starring William Shatner), one vintage promo film, a special Legends Award intro from actor Bruce Campbell, a William Grefe trailer gallery, still gallery and more!
